238 pounds of bite force…
Yup! That’s the maximum bite force your German Shepherd can excerpt.
Pretty powerful! Second only to the Rottweiler and more powerful than the Pit Bull.
Sure, your GSD is likely to only use that force when they are protecting themselves or you. But even at half power, they are able to destroy something in a matter of minutes.
So that leaves us, the lovers of this exceptional breed scratching our heads with the question…
What are the best chew toys for German Shepherds?
I’ve spent more money on toys than I’d like my husband to know about! Yes, I’ve wasted money on a ton of crappy chew toys.
And unfortunately, there aren’t many toys that can keep up with a German Shepherd’s chewing power.
So I’ve brought together the cream of the crop right here…
Hey, if you’re in a rush check out my 2 favorite indestructible toys on Amazon…

The Best Chew Toys for German Shepherds
Rogz Da Bone
Da Bone is a bouncy bone. Did I just state the obvious here?!
It’s made from durable rubber using gum massaging tech. So it’s soft enough not to hurt your dog’s teeth or gums.
It’s great for chewing to develop jaw strength and keep those gnashers healthy. Our Da Bone was great when my pups were teething. It kept my furniture safe and them entertained.
Cram it full of treats and give it to your GSD for a mind stimulating game. Or use it as a fetch toy – this bone bounces where it wants to, keeping your dog on its paws!
There are different sizes on offer depending on your GSD’s stage of development.
These chew toys are super easy to clean, just hand wash with lukewarm water.
Watch out though, they are damn heavy, having a Da Bone dropped on your foot is no laughing matter!
Pupz Da Bone [Small]:
The Pupz Da Bone range comes in 2 sizes – /4″ and /6″
I recommend these for young pups. Mine used these during teething. Starting with the /4″ and then upgrading to the /6″.
Just keep an eye on those little teeth. All your pup wants to do is relieve that annoying feeling of teething so always supervise chewing.

Pupz Da Bone [Small 3.5″]
This Da Bone is suitable for pups just past their teething stage.
Of course, you can double it up as a mind puzzle by filling it with treats. This stimulates your GSD’s natural desire to forage for food.
But, this bone does not float. In fact, none of the Da Bone range do. So don’t chuck it in the lake, river or swimming pool like I did!
Rogz Da Bone [Medium 5.5″]
Upgrade your GSD to this Da Bone after the age of 12 months. By now they have lost all their baby teeth. But your furniture still needs some protection. Give those gnashers something more serious to chew on with this bigger Da Bone.
Rogz Da Bone [Large 8″]
This is the big kahuna of the Da Bone range. And the one your adult GSD can safely enjoy.
All the bells, whistles and safety features included, as you can expect from a well-known brand like Rogz.

JW Pet – Bad Cuz Rubber Ball
This is another toy brand that falls into the category of best chew toys for German Shepherds.
And one close to my heart…
The medium sized ball saw my pups through puppyhood and they still enjoy them today.
I do modify them first before handing them to my dogs…
First thing is I cut off the little feet. Sure, they’re cute and all but not exactly practical. I also cut off the small pointy horns for the same reason.
I supervise until the squeaker is destroyed – which takes about 5 minutes – and then remove it.
Now you might be asking; “Gabriella, why buy a toy that you need to modify for safety?”
Well, both our Bad Cuz Rubber Balls have lasted over 3 4 years and they’re still going strong. They are durable and my dogs love them. So I’m okay with making a few mods if it means my dogs are happy and safe.
And they come in pink and blue – what more could a dog-toy-obsessed girl ask for?!

Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Diamond Plate Ball
This ball is designed using Orbee-Tough rubber unique to Planet Dog. Which makes it a strong contender for one of the best chew toys for German Shepherds.
And this ball can multi-task!
It’s made to chew, bounce and float.
So take your GSD to the lake for a game of fetch. Bounce it off the boundary wall in your back yard.
Or…
Watch your GSD work hard to chew their way through it. It not only stimulates their working gene but the more difficult it is to destroy- and it IS difficult – the more fun the game is for them.

The ball has that fun, unpredictable bounce making fetch a high energy game. But that’s not all…

West Paw Zogoflex Hurley
The Hurley definitely falls into the category of best chew toys for German Shepherds.
We all know that hunting for a lost toy can easily spoil a great game of fetch. So the Hurley comes in the 4 easy-to-find, signature colors of West Paw…
Similar to the Jive Zoloflex ball the Hurley is non-toxic. Considering the fact that it’s going to spend a lot of time in your GSD’s mouth, this safety feature counts a great deal.
It’s a great toy to support your GSD’s need to chew. It floats and bounces. Giving your dog the mental and physical stimulation he or she needs. Happy dog = Happy you!
It comes in 3 sizes; mini, small and large this is great for the puppy phase and adult phase too.
And like all West Paw toys, if your GSD destroys it, send it back for a full refund – I think that’s a sweet deal!
And just to top it off, the Hurley is also easy to clean and dishwasher safe!

Elk Antler by Buck Bone Organics
If you’ve been around here for a while you know I raw feed my crew. So I’m all for toys and treats that are natural.
So when I came across these Elk Antlers by Buck Bone Organics I got super excited!
These are made in Montana, USA. Each year Elks naturally shed their antlers and the folks from Buck Bone Organics collect these and turn them into these amazing chew treats for dogs.
Elk antlers are not just great for keeping your pooch occupied. They are filled with healthy, yummy stuff like calcium, phosphorus, manganese, and zinc. These are things your pooch won’t get from any other toy.
Their Large antlers are around 6 to 7 inches and perfect for the large German Shepherd. And there are 2 varieties you can choose from.
The first one is a Split Antler. I like the fact that the marrow is exposed. Which makes it easy for your dog to get to the good stuff.
See the Split Antler by Buck Bone Organics on Amazon.
Although it won’t last as long. I’d use this one for younger dogs and seniors.
Then there’s the regular antler for large dogs. It’s more along the lines of what you’ll want for your fully grown GSD in the prime of their life. It’s way more robust and will take some work to get to the marrow hidden inside.
There are a lot of things I love about these antlers by Bone Buck Organics. But one that stands out for me is the health benefits. And because it’s all-natural the chances of your pooch getting an upset tummy is very slim.

West Paw Design
West Paw offers great quality dog toys. They promise to give you a one-time replacement if you or your GSD is not happy with their toys.
I think that’s a good promise. You can tell if your dog is going to destroy the toy within a few minutes.
And if your GSD is uninterested you can send it back too.
Planet Dog
They believe in their product so much they go as far as saying “100% guaranteed anytime, every time”.
Their toys are made in the U.S. and being 100% recyclable they’re kind on the environment too.
Okay, I’m on-a-roll here!
So, I’ll share with you a bunch of the best chew toys for German Shepherds too.
These are NOT your run-of-the-mill chew toys. They are durable and ones your GSD will get a lot of mileage out of.
Rogz
Rogz is a company close to my heart. Their toys helped me raise two of the busiest and most naughty pups I’ve ever met.
And it has its roots in South Africa.
Their toys are CE approved and non-toxic. And they are manufactured with natural rubber. Meaning it’s safe for your dog to chew. And there’s no chance of bleeding gums either.
Buck Bone Organics
The first thing I love about Buck Bone Organics is that they are a small family owned business. Small is always good when it comes to quality and safety.
Secondly, they use products nature provides, naturally. What does that mean?
Well, every year bull elk’s naturally shed their antlers and that’s what Buck Bone uses to make their all-natural elk antler chews.
No elk is ever hurt in the process of bringing your GSD the most natural chew toy out there.
Conclusion
It’s a smart move to see your pooch’s toys as an investment. And investing in the best chew toys for German Shepherds will save you money and time in the long run.
Not to mention avoiding the possible vet visits to remove junk toys from your dog’s teeth or worse, stomach.
Now that you’re equipped with knowledge and recommendations, choosing the best there is for your GSD will be a no-brainer.
The only downside?
Well… There isn’t one! Just hours of fun and games.
What more could a loved GSD ask for!?
